Quote: The Paradox of Choice

On April 26, 2011 at 11:22 am in: Design & Experience

A large array of options may discourage consumers because it forces an increase in the effort that goes into making a decision. So consumers decide not to decide, and don’t buy the product. Or if they do, the effort that the decision requires detracts from the enjoyment derived from the results. Also, a large array of options may diminish the attractiveness of what people actually choose, the reason being that thinking about the attractions of some of the unchosen options detracts from the pleasure derived from the chosen one.

Redesign Part Deux

On April 20, 2011 at 7:54 pm in: Design & Experience

After over two years, hmuljadi.com got another redesign. Some things I’ve changed:

  • Navigation: I turned old-school here and moved away from the one-page website thing
  • Portfolio page: I realized that it was getting harder to talk about my portfolio within the confines of accordion (umm what was I thinking anyway?), so I gave it a much deserved relocation to its own page
  • Contact page: in addition to the footer links, I now have a list of all my social presences all on one page. 1m s0 l33t
  • Design tweaks: literally I had to stop myself from going on and on with the tweaks, but this design will do for now. I’m still keeping it simple, but now the site uses a much wider design (hey, it looks good in my obscenely monitors!). Getting rid of the bounding borders also opened the design, which helps to make the site breathe.

Oh and to prove to the purists that there were some thoughts involved, here’s the sketch at its roughest:

Lastly, I will make another empty promise that I will try to blog more often. I’ve been able to find a little more free time now that I get home from work at a decent hour.
