{"id":15,"date":"2009-03-13T15:25:14","date_gmt":"2009-03-13T19:25:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hmuljadi.com\/blog\/?p=15"},"modified":"2013-03-12T11:43:34","modified_gmt":"2013-03-12T15:43:34","slug":"design-by-committee-video-hilarious-but-true","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hmuljadi.com\/blog\/design-experience\/design-by-committee-video-hilarious-but-true\/","title":{"rendered":"Design by Committee Video: Hilarious but true"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A very clever and funny video depicting the oh-so-common design process that involves a lot of people, a.k.a Design by Committee.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Background<\/strong>: Design by Committee usually consists of a designer and a group of people (usually clients) who seemingly do not communicate with each other.\u00a0 This process is usually accompanied by a flurry of additional features that were never mentioned in the requirements gathering phase, and it goes on throughout the life cycle of the design phase.<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"480\" height=\"295\" data=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/Wac3aGn5twc&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/Wac3aGn5twc&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>This process usually happens because design is subjective; when it comes to design, everyone is a designer.\u00a0 When this happens, in most cases the web designer ends up being a pixel-pusher doing everything the client tells them to do in order to satisfy the client and make them happy.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not entirely the client&#8217;s fault that this happens.\u00a0 It usually comes down to a misunderstanding of the process where the client is simply trying to help solve the problem instead of letting the designer (who they hired) to do that job.\u00a0 So instead of saying &#8220;I&#8217;m not sure if that pink background color will appeal to our male secondary target market&#8221;, the client would instead say &#8220;Can we try blue or darker background instead of that pink?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I feel that the appropriate and more productive way to handle communication such as design feedback is by focusing more on the project goals than the specifics.<\/p>\n<p>Designers are problem solvers.\u00a0\u00a0 By focusing on the project goals, the client will actually be using the expertise of the designer (that they hired) to solve their problem.\u00a0 Also this will allow the designer to use his\/her intuition and judgment to design as he sees fit.<\/p>\n<p>Think Apple.\u00a0 Steve Jobs is a one-man dictator when it comes to design, and look at how successful Apple&#8217;s product design is!<\/p>\n<p><strong>What experience have you had dealing with Design by Committee?<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"fblikebutton_button\" style=\"\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/like.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fhmuljadi.com%2Fblog%2Fdesign-experience%2Fdesign-by-committee-video-hilarious-but-true%2F&amp;layout=standard&amp;show-faces=true&amp;width=450&amp;action=like&amp;colorscheme=light\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowTransparency=\"true\" style=\"border:none;
